Shaved Brussels Sprouts Salad with Avocado Vinaigrette + Weekly Inspirations

We just spent a marvelous week in the windy city.  I believe I am now at 28 states with 22 more to go to complete my bucket list of visiting all 50.  Chicagois an amazing city filled with great restaurants, a drop dead gorgeous skyline, friendly people, history and culture.  It was an inspirational vacation on many levels and will share some of the highlights for my weekly inspirations.

(Click "Read More" below to continue post)

Shaved Brussels Sprouts Salad with Avocado Vinaigrette

Salad

4 Cups Shredded BrusselsSprouts (About 16 sprouts)
1/3 Cup Toasted Pinenuts
½ Cup Parmesan Cheese, shredded

Use a mandolin or very sharp knife to slice the Brusselssuper thin.  Add to a large bowl along with pinenuts and parmesan cheese.

Croutons

1 Cup Croutons – use a baguette and cut into ½ cubes
1 Tablespoon Olive oil
½ teaspoon Garlic powder

Add all ingredients to a bowl and toss well until all is coated.  Spread over a cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees.  Lightly sprinkle with salt right after removing from the oven and let cool.

Avocado Vinaigrette

1 Ripe avocado
4 Tablespoon Olive Oil
½ teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 large garlic clove, finely minced
3 Peppadew peppers, finely chopped
1 Tablespoon peppadew juice
8 to 10 Grinds fresh pepper

Add all ingredients except peppadew peppers, to a food processor and pulse until creamy. Place into a bowl and mix in the peppadew peppers.  Taste and adjust seasonings to your desired levels.

Assembly

Add the vinaigrette to the bowl of shaved Brussels sprouts and toss well.  Serve individual portions and sprinkle croutons on top for a finishing touch.  Inspired from RPM Italian in Chicago!

RPM Italian

RPM Italian was recommended by several individuals and is co-owned by Bill and Giuliana Rancic.  He won the first season of The Apprentice and she is a news host on E! News.  They met, fell in love, married and now are restaurateurs. It is stylish, glamorous, sophisticated and has a particular energetic vibe.  The cocktails are a spin on the classics and the food is certainly delicious.  First glance, the menu looks simple but the dishes are flavorful, inventive and well executed.  We particularly loved the Shaved Brussels Sprouts Salad with Avocado – so much that I came home and created my version of this tasty salad.  If in Chicago, put RPM on your list!

Grace

The word “consistency” was written on the white board in the kitchen.  We were lucky enough to have the table right in front of the open kitchen.  Chef Duffy runs an expert operation at Grace – hence the namesake – everything is done with Grace.  From the canapés that arrive in synchronicity to the 8 courses that proceed after to the perfectly paired wines to the after meal "one on one" kitchen tour - this restaurant is on its way to perfection.  Whether you choose the “flora” or “fauna” tasting menu, the price is the same and worth every dollar you spend.  Someday sooner than later I predict, this will be a multiple Michelin Star restaurant and almost impossible to secure a reservation. This restaurant is not one to be missed!

Longman & Eagle

If you are into a hip restaurant, then don’t miss eating at Longman & Eagle located in the newly cool Logan Square neighborhood outside of downtown Chicago.   Oh, if you love whiskey they have 150 to choose from along with other interesting libations.  The food is imaginative, tasty, extremely appetizing and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.  A bit off the beaten path if you are staying in downtown Chicagobut completely worth the cab ride there to have a great meal. We had Mr. Toads Wild Ride cab driver and certainly needed a drink when we walked through the door. Thank goodness the selections were bountiful. By the way, don’t miss ordering the Warm Cheese Gourgeres with Gruyere Mornay Sauce that oozes onto your plate.  Simply out of this world delicious.

Trump International Hotel and Tower Chicago

The Donald certainly knows how to build, execute and provide the “wow factor” to his customers.  From the moment you walk into the lobby and inhale the beautiful scents emanating from the multiple burning candles to the warm hand towels offered while checking in that sit a top a marble tray with a fresh orchid to the high level of service provided by the person who delivers your bags to your room, we knew we were in for an opulent stay at the Trump Hotel in Chicago.  I even had Bill Rancic walk right by me while we were checking in - kept thinking he looked familiar.  Not much of a "star searcher" but it was fun to see him - he is certainly tall.

We had a 700 square foot suite on the 25th floor (actual photo of our room) that overlooked the city and down to Navy Pier.  The room had a full kitchen with sub-zero fridge, nespresso machine and even china.  Oh the bathroom had a television built into the mirror and you had a pillow menu to choose the perfect pillow to be delivered to your room.  Donald – what haven’t you thought about?  The Terrace at Trump on the 16th floor was a frequent jaunt for an afternoon cocktail that also provided an outstanding view, cool tunes and great people watching.  Highly recommend you book your next vacation at a Trump Hotel – worth every dollar.

The Hancock Tower

The Hancock Tower is a must see iconic building at night.  You fly up in an elevator to the 95thfloor to the Signature Room for a drink or two.  I recommend the Pear Martini.  You are treated to a view that is simply priceless and amazing to look at while you sip on your libation.

 Ralph Lauren Restaurant & Bar

If you are a Ralph Lauren fan, this is the store for you. We found out that this is the largest store in Americaand even includes a restaurant.  Within the restaurant is a small intimate bar that is encased in rich wood and the wall behind the bar is stacked full of any libation your heart desires.  We enjoyed an afternoon cocktail.  Who gets to normally do that during the week?  Not us, we are usually working.  What a special treat!

 Architectural Boat Tour

This is a tremendous way to capture the beauty of the Chicagoarchitecture while strolling down the river and getting a guided tour of the history of Chicago.  Eventually the boat makes its way to the expansive lake and your view of the city becomes even grander and you can really comprehend the size and scope of this amazing city.  Loved every moment!

Chicago Skyline

Chicago is known for its buildings and skyline.  You must savor it from the street level, a boat, the top of a skyscraper or from the small window in the airplane as you descend into Midway or O’Hare.  Quite impressive and inspirational.

 Michigan Avenue

Not quite 5th Avenuein New York but I would garner that Chicago's Magnificent Mile is a close second.  You have Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Burberry and almost any other designer you love can be found here.  I was in awe of the planter boxes that had the most beautiful flowers and greenery in each one.  They were so lush and eye catching and reminded me of what you might see strolling the streets of London.  What a fun day of shopping we had!

Rhubarb Ice Cream + Weekly Inspirations

Rhubarb always catapults me back to my childhood in an instant.  My Mom would prepare it in a simple fashion by cutting into cubes along with adding a bit of sugar and then proceed to cook it until soft.  She would let it cool and we would eat it.  I absolutely love it prepared this way.  With the season in full swing, I thought why not make some Rhubarb Ice Cream to celebrate the season and near arrival of summer.  I wanted to add that something extra to the recipe, so I added pomegranate liquor.  Quite honestly, it was the perfect addition.

(Click "Read More" below to continue post)

Rhubarb Ice Cream

Rhubarb
1 pound Rhubarb, chopped (remove all green leaves)
¼ Cup + 2 Tablespoons Sugar
1 Tablespoon Water

Add the rhubarb, water and sugar to a medium sized sauce pan and cook over medium heat.  Cook for about 15 to 20 minutes or until the rhubarb is soft and let cool completely in the refrigerator.

Ice Cream Custard
2 Cups Heavy Cream
¼ Cup Milk
4 Tablespoon Pomegranate Liquor
6 Tablespoons Sugar

In a medium pot, add the cream, milk and sugar.  Cook on medium high until it is lightly scalded and the sugar is dissolved.  Remove any film from the scalding process.  Let cool.  Add the pomegranate liquor and stir.  Cool completely in the refrigerator.

Making Ice Cream
Add the cooled rhubarb mixture to the cooled custard and stir until combined.  Add to your ice cream maker and process according to your machines instructions.  Transfer to a container and freeze until solid.

Trader Joe’s:
Cheese Spotlight

If you are like me and LOVE Trader Joe’s then I want to let you in on a quick secret.  Recently I was browsing through the cheese section and picked up aged white cheddar.  While checking out and chatting with the Trader Joe’s employee, he complimented me on choosing one of the “Spotlight” cheeses.  He went on to explain that about every 2 to 4 weeks, they rotate a different cheese and is typically an artisan cheese that they don’t normally carry.  If you are looking for unique and delicious cheeses, check out the spotlight.

Restaurant:
Gather

Yesterday my friend Helen took me out for my birthday celebration to Gather in Berkeley.  Having been there once before, I knew that we must enjoy the Bacon, Caramelized Onion, Oregano and Egg Pizza.  It has to be one of the most delectable pizzas on earth!  If you are heading to Berkeley, make a reservation at Gather – you won’t be disappointed.  By the way, enjoy their Kale Salad and Little Gem Salad – both divine!

Shopping:
4th Streetin Berkeley

After Gather, we ventured to one of our favorite shopping destinations in the Bay Area – 4th Street.  Anthropologie, The Gardner, ZGallerie and CB2are among my favorites.  If you are hungry check out Café Rouge, Zut and Tacubaya.  I have dined at all of those and highly recommend.

Happy Hour:
St. Germaine Cocktail

With it being birthday week, my parents took hubby and me out for my birthday dinner to Ruth’s Chris – a birthday celebration favorite.  Since we did not have to drive, we took part in having a pre-dinner cocktail.  One of my favorites is a St. Germaine Cocktail with a sparkling wine, prosecco or champagne with a splash or two of St. Germaine.  Simply refreshing!

Grilled Romaine Salad with Smoky Barbecue Vinaigrette + Weekly Inspirations

The last few days have definitely had summer reveal itself here in the Bay Area.  Personally I love it!  Each day this weekend we enjoyed our backyard with wine, food and friends.  Summer means salads too.  Recently I made what I deem the “Perfect Summer Salad”.  It is a Grilled Romaine Salad with Smoky Barbecue Vinaigrette.  Found the dressing recipe in the June issue of Food and Wine Magazine and created the rest of this divine salad.

(Click "Read More" below to continue post)

Simple Recipe:
Grilled Romaine Salad with Smoky Barbecue Vinaigrette

Salad

2 large heads of Romaine, cut in half lengthwise
1 Large Onion, peeled and sliced into ¼ slices
½ Cup Roasted Red Bell Pepper, sliced thin
1 Cup Cherry Tomatoes cut in half

Heat an indoor or outdoor grill.  In the mean time, brush the heads of romaine lightly with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.  Lay on the grill and let cook for 1 to 2 minutes until char marks show.  Remove and let cool.

Brush each onion slice with olive oil and lay onto the grill to cook until softened and char marks show.  Remove from grill and let sit when warm in a bowl with tin foil covering it until ready to use.  This will continue the cooking and soften the onions.

Croutons
Baguette, cut into 24 one inch cubes
¼ Cup Olive Oil
2 teaspoons Sweet Paprika

Mix olive oil and paprika together in a medium bowl.  Lightly cover each cube of bread.  Place onto a large cookie sheet spaced an inch apart.  Bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 to 15 minutes or until crunchy and golden brown.  Remove to cool.  Set aside until ready to assemble salad.

Smoky Barbecue Vinaigrette

¼ Cup Smoky Barbecue Sauce (I used Stubb's)
¼ Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 Tablespoons Fresh Lemon Juice
1 Tablespoon Honey

Place all ingredients into a jar and shake well.  Set aside until ready to use.

Salad Assembly:

On four plates, lay one of the grilled romaine heads in the middle.  Sprinkle the grilled onions and cherry tomatoes around.  Toss a few of the roasted red bell peppers. (I used the ones from the jar from Trader Joe's) Drizzle the dressing and adorn with 6 of the croutons on each plate.  Serves 4.

I am not a huge fan of donuts like my hubby is.  In fact hubby has a complete adoration for those large apple fritters among the other donut varieties.  I on the other hand am fascinated by the light and airy texture and taste of the cruller.  Always wanted to learn to make them and NOW I can from here.

Stunning Restaurant:
Grace

Our Chicago trip is approaching and I am researching what fabulous restaurants we want to book.  One keeps popping up in my research, Grace and just might have to hit the RSVP button on Open Table.  It is ever inspiring with the option to have 8 or 12 courses – you heard me right – 12 courses.  Albeit small portions, that is mind blowing - should I book it?

Individual Pineapple Upside-Down Cakes with Salted Caramel Drizzle + Weekly Inspirations

Fresh on the heels of attending the Dole Taste of SpainSalad Summit, I was inspired to recreate a classic dessert that we enjoyed at the summit – Pineapple Upside-Down Cake.  I served it my dinner party I hosted last weekend and decided to make individual servings and kick it up with my handmade Salted Caramel Sauce for that added WOW factor.  Easy, delicious and a crowd pleaser!

(Click "Read More" below to continue post)

Simple Recipe:
Individual Pineapple Upside-Down Cakes with Salted Caramel Drizzle

¼ Cup Butter
2/3 Cup packed Brown Sugar
6 Slices Pineapple in juice (14 oz. can), drained
6 Fresh cherry halves
1 1/3 Cup All-purpose flour
1 Cup Sugar
1/3 Cup Shortening
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon of vanilla
¾ Cup Milk
1 large Egg

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Use 6 ramekins, approximately 2 ½ inches tall.  To prepare the ramekins, melt the butter in a glass bowl in the microwave.  Brush the entire inside of each ramekin with the melted butter and divide any remaining butter evening between each ramekin.  Divide the brown sugar evening among all ramekins.  Place the drained pineapple slice at the bottom of each ramekin.  Place the cherry cut side up inside the pineapple slice.  Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of salted caramel sauce on top of the pineapple and set aside.

To make the batter, use a stand mixer.  Add the shortening and sugar and mix until creamy.  Add the egg, baking powder, vanilla and salt and mix well.  Next add the milk and gently mix until combined.  Slowly add the flour until combined.  Mixture will be fairly thick.  Spoon evenly among all six ramekins.  Bake for about 30 to 35 minutes or until a knife comes out clean.  Let sit for a couple minutes and then turn onto a plate and drizzle with warm salted caramel sauce and enjoy warm.

Recipe slightly adapted from here.

Salted Caramel Sauce

1 ½ C. sugar
¼ C. water
½ t. lemon juice
1 C. heavy cream

2 t. Grey Salt

Stir sugar, water and lemon juice in a large saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Increase the heat; boil without stirring until the mixture turns deep amber brown. This should take about 9 minutes. Take off the stove and hold over the sink before pouring the cream mixture into the sugar mixture. It will boil and bubble. Once calmed down, add grey salt and set back on the burner and reduce slightly over medium low heat for about 8 minutes. Chill until thickened. Put into another container and slightly heat when ready to use.

Farmer's Market Salad with Sweet Paprika Dressing + Weekly Inspirations

Last week was chalk full of inspiration.  I was invited as a VIP Food Blogger to the Dole “Taste of Spain Salad Summit” in beautiful Carmel.  It was three days of talking about food, blogging, salads and learning about how the lettuce makes it to your table.  I gained new knowledge, met great people and will share the entire experience in a few days.  In the meantime, I was inspired to make a Farmer’s Market Salad with Sweet Paprika Dressing that I will share with all of you.

(Click "Read More" below to continue post)

Simple Recipe:
Farmer’s Market Salad with Sweet Paprika Dressing

I was inspired by learning about the numerous varieties of lettuce at the Dole Taste of Spain Salad Summit.  I decided to use Tuscan Kale, Arugula, and Frisee along with baby roasted beets, mini rainbow carrots, Easter Egg Radishes, cherry tomatoes and pickled cauliflower.

Sweet Paprika Dressing
3 Tablespoons Crème Fraiche
2 Tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
6 to 8 drops of hot sauce
2 teaspoons Sweet Paprika
2 Tablespoons Spanish Olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste

Simply mix well and let sit for 30 minutes to develop flavor.  Toss with lettuce and lightly coat the vegetables.  Enjoy!

Shopping Inspiration:
Whole Foods Market

A few days ago on the way home from my trip to Carmel, I stopped in Whole Foods to pick up some fun ingredients to make a healthy salad.  Of course, I needed to pursue through the wonderful and magical cheese counter.  It is like visiting Disneyland.  One particular display caught my attention – It was a gorgeous log of chèvre, (Goat Cheese) with lemon curd drizzled on top and adorned with fresh blueberries.  Simple and stunning!

Fun New App:

Have you downloaded this new app – “A Beautiful Mess” yet?  If not, it is great.  It is like having Instagram’s "BFF" on your phone.  Essentially it adds fun and whimsical boarders, text and images to your Instagram photos.  Move from ordinary to extraordinary - smile.

Early in my blogging days, I began following Patty’s beautiful blog, Patty's Food.  Later, we were finally able to meet in person through a blogger brunch that Jean from Lemon and Anchovies put together.  She is as lovely in person as she is in her blog.  Patty also hosted a Valentine’s Day Cookie Party and we were able to see her amazing garden from which she makes many of her tasty delights.  Patty makes amazing baked goodies along with stunning salads and much more.  Take a few minutes to dive into her beautiful blog – you will probably spend more than just a few minutes.  Trust me. Smile.

Healthy Inspiration:
Eating Well Magazine

If you don’t purchase or subscribe to Eating Well Magazine, you are missing out.  It is chalk full of beautiful recipes that are well tested and full of amazing flavor.  Lisa Gosselin is the Editorial Director and Stacy Fraser is the Test Kitchen Manager.  Both were an integral part of the Dole “Taste of Spain Salad Summit”.  I had the opportunity to get to know each one and they are extremely interesting people who are inspired everyday by great food, recipes and the stories they tell.  The June issue is amazing!

Inspiration Destination:
Carmel ValleyRanch

Dole selected the Carmel Valley Ranch to host the “Taste of Spain Salad Summit” and they could not have chosen a more beautiful resort.  It is nestled in the luscious Carmel Valley and at the peak of a hill for spectacular views of the valley.  From the rustic mission style décor to the fire pit where each evening a selection of smore accoutrements are laid out for you to create your smore masterpiece. I will share more with my upcoming post along with photos of this magical place.

Must Have:
Arugula Candle

I am obsessed with this Arugula scented candle made by Archipelago.  It is a hand-poured soy candle which burns longer and cleaner than regular candles.  The scent permeates the house and it propels you to a relaxing spa.  One of my favs!

Entertaining Inspiration:
Kinfolk Magazine

While sifting through Pinterest last week, I stumbled upon the photo above and was mesmerized.  This would be the quintessential way to entertain with a beautiful wood board and an assortment of mouth watering appetizers.  Check out Kinfolk magazine for a plethora of entertaining inspirations along with their blog.  The possibilities are endless.

Must See:
Beach Blanket Babylon

One of my teams at work won Presidents Club for 2012 and we decided as a group to celebrate by heading into San Francisco to see Beach Blanket Babylon at Club Fugazi.  It had been over ten years since I had seen it.  The characters consistently change to depict the most current people in pop culture, politics along with some historical folks.  Essentially Snow White (or as they call her – Snow Pop, Snow Ho, Snow Glow, etc) is on the hunt to find her Prince and she travels the world in search of him.  My favorite character was Barbara Streisand with her ten inch nails – could not stop laughing.  If you are in San Francisco, be sure to get tickets to this super entertaining classic show.

Simple Recipe:
Strawberries with Bourbon Brown Sugar Dip

You know it is late spring, early summer when Strawberries make an arrival on the red carpet.  They are luscious, juicy, bursting with flavor, sweet and the perfect simple dessert.  I was inspired to bring these special red berries to the next level.  Why not dip them into a perfect blend of Crème Fraiche, Bourbon and Brown Sugar.  I know, right?  The dip is simply 8 ounces Crème Fraiche, 1 tablespoon bourbon and 3 tablespoons brown sugar mixed together.  Serve with freshly wash strawberries and extra brown sugar for dipping.

Career:
Unleashing Greatness

I attended a HR Conference at the end of April. One of the sessions caught my eye.  It was titled – “Developing Next Generation Leaders for Future Growth”.  The session was amazing!  It exceeded my expectations and gave practical concepts that I put in place that next week at work.  The session was lead by Alan Fine who wrote a book called – “You Already Know How to Be Great”.  I purchased several copies of the book and gave one to each of my Branch Managers.  Whether you are in business or not, this book shares ways to remove interference and unlocks greatness.  It truly has changed my thought process for me and sharing ways to lead my team to greatness.

Simply Inspiring:
3 Special Women from Ohio

Earlier in the week, the news story of the 3 brave women who had been held captive for nearly a decade simply amazed me.  As the story unfolded and some of the details were revealed, it was almost unimaginable how they survived – but they did.  I am truly inspired by their courage, strength and faith.  They have their families and quite frankly the world behind them.  May they be given the time to heal and acclimate back into their lives with some semblance of normality.

Winery Spotlight:
Chalk Hill

Chalk Hill Winery is a landmark winery in the Alexander Valley in Sonoma County and owned by Bill Foley.  They are recognized for their Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blanc and Estate Reds.  It is an immense estate covering 1,477 acres.  We took the “Estate Tour” which includes a ride in a hummer, wine tasting along with absorbing the history and information on the wines.  This is an amazing winery to visit and has some uniqueness that you will not find elsewhere.

Book Club:
Steve Jobs

Several months ago my book club read Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson.  It was departure from the typical types of books we select to read as a group.  I enjoyed each and every page.  Through Walter’s many interviews with Steve Jobs along with hundreds of family members, friends, adversaries, competitors and colleagues, he shares a riveting story of Steve Jobs extreme passion for perfection and drive that revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablets and digital publishing.  It inspires me that one person made such a difference.

Rosemary Citrus Water + Weekly Inspirations

Many, many things give me inspiration.  I have always been a creative person since being a kid. Often my mind is running in circles with so many thoughts and consistently being inspired.  It could be from a photo I saw on Pinterest, flipping through a magazine, chatting with a friend or co-worker or something I dream up on my own.  Does this happen to you?

We live in a world that is filled with diversity, creativity and so much to see, experience and accomplish.  Depending on what is important to you, life is rather short and my philosophy is like the Nike commercial – Just Do It!  Going forward, each weekend I will bring you a list of my ten inspirations.  Some topics will be consistent week to week and others will be simply what inspired me during the week.  As I always say to my team at work – “It would be awfully boring, if everyone or everything was the same.”

My weekly inspirations will consist of quotes that resonate with me to a section on my favorite food bloggers (this list is endless and I am excited to share each week with you) to career advise to Bay Area favorites to wineries and restaurants to simply interesting inspirations.  I hope you enjoy seeing what inspires me and hopefully will inspire you. I look forward to hearing your comments to what inspires you day to day.

Simple Recipe:
Rosemary Citrus Water

Imagine yourself at a spa sipping those delicious flavored waters.  From cucumber to strawberry mint to orange flavored waters, the flavor profiles are endless.  Hubby calls flavored water - "Pretty Water".  Here is a simple recipe for turning ordinary water to extraordinary.  In a large pitcher, layer sliced lemons, sprigs of washed rosemary with ice and then fill with filtered water.  Let sit for about 15 minutes to develop the flavors.

Restaurant Recommendation:
Presidio Social Club

Last weekend was our monthly Restaurant Club gathering.  Our club is simple - Me plus two food loving friends.  We pick a place that is new to all of us.  We rotate who "picks and pays".  Essentially every third time, I get to pick and pay.  It is a terrific way to eat our way through the Bay Area, which could take a couple lifetimes to accomplish.  The choice last weekend was Presidio Social Club located on the beautiful San Francisco Presidio.  If you decide to go, I would highly suggest the Brioche Beignets, Gruyere Cheese Toasts with Tomato Fondue Dip and the Chopped Kale Salad with carrots, radish, golden beets, pumpkin seeds and sherry vinaigrette.

Food Blogger Spotlight:
Jean from Lemon and Anchovies

During my four years of blogging thus far, I have met wonderful new friends, tried many recipes, learned about technology, enhanced my writing skills, continue to learn and hopefully one day master my photography skills and hopefully made people smile when they enjoy my food.  As you will notice, meeting new friends was first on the list.  Jean from Lemons and Anchovies was among one of the first I met online. We soon realized through our posts, that both of our hubbies flew small planes and that we had a love for food and blogging.  We met live and a friendship grew plus our hubbies became friends.  How cool is that?  If you have not had the opportunity to experience Jean's blog, please take a culinary and travel journey through her eyes.  She has amazing recipes, highlights great travel destinations and beautiful photography.

Career:
Sheryl Sandberg's Book - Lean In

By day, I am a Vice President at a Human Capital Firm.  I consistently thirst for knowledge to enhance my leadership skills along with leading my team to greatness.  When I first saw Sheryl speak, it was with Oprah. I was instantly drawn to her insight and wisdom in the workplace. Immediately I signed up on leanin.org to become part of a community of career oriented women. Next I purchased the book, which I am currently enjoying. If you are a working woman (outside or inside the home), looking for pragmatic advice, suggestions on moving your career forward, becoming a better you, determining what you can do versus what you can't and being part of the next generation of leaders - this book is for YOU!

Simply Interesting:
Martha on Match.com

I say - "You go girl"!  Martha is an iconic domestic mogul and at 71 years young, she is taking a huge leap of faith by joining Match.com to find the love of her life.  Will she?  I certainly hope so. Big smile. I must say, she looks fabulous and it will be interesting to follow her journey to finding her soul mate.

Winery Spotlight:
Lancaster Estate

We have been loyal members of Lancaster Estate for a number of years. Last year for my birthday, we spent a weekend in Healdsburg and finally made a visit to this divine winery. Having enjoyed our private tour, we quickly signed up for one of the exquisite members only wine release parties. Let me just say - the food was divine - from Duck Confit Savory Donuts with Lingonberry Sauce to the Cookie Bar with various frosting choices. If you are heading to wine country, make sure to make a reservation at Lancaster Estate - you will not be disappointed, especially if you love great red wine.

Travel Destination:
Chicago

One of my bucket list items is to visit all 50 states.  Thus far, I have 28 states under my belt.  Next on the list is Chicago. Hubby needs to make a trip there, so why not check off another state. He has been dying to show me around there since he spent a summer there for work years ago and love it. Having never been there, I am busy researching where to go, what to see, where to eat and determining how to take in as much as we can in the short time we will be there. Recommendations welcome!!

Book Club:
Cocktail Hour Under The Tree Of Forgetfulness

Do you belong to a book club?  About three years ago, one of my dear friends invited me to be a part of her then almost ten year old book club. I was impressed by their sheer intelligence, enormous feeling of welcoming to the group and each person was sincere and real.  I had made a goal to read more and this would be a perfect way to check that goal off the list along with making eight new friends.  We typically read New York Best Sellers and several months ago, we read "Cocktail Hour Under The Tree Of Forgetfulness" by Alexandra Fuller. Highly recommend!

Bay Area Destination:
San Francisco Cooking School

Over the years, I have attended various cooking schools around the Bay Area from Tante Marie, Draegers to Kitchens on Fire and enjoyed them all.  A relatively new rising star cooking school is making a name for itself - San Francisco Cooking School.  As stated in their website - "San Francisco Cooking School is committed to building an anchored institution for culinary arts education in San Francisco that reflects the global influence and on-going conversation of California Cuisine."  They offer a rigorous certification program along with a hands-on recreational cooking classes in the Bay Area.  Goal:  Attend a class before the end of 2013!
